Belgian paper specialist Century Box Mainetti highlighted its sustainable offer during this year’s Edition Spéciale by LUXE PACK trade show. Wood waste hangers, rigid cardboard gift boxes and eco-designed padded envelopes were all on display.

Specializing in paper carrier bags and gift boxes for retail, Century Box Mainetti says it is allocating resources in the context of a 15-year strategy to achieve “hyper eco-responsibility”. On show at its booth during the 2023 Edition Spéciale by LUXE PACK exhibition was the new version of its Loop rigid cardboard 100% paper box. No magnets or Velcro were used in its production; once the box is assembled, a simple tab fits into a designated slot to secure it shut. The box is delivered to the customer as a flat pack in a bid to lower the carbon footprint used for its transport.

Said to be more rigid than the previous model, this version features improved closure thanks to a system of inner notches. The pull-out tab is made of 100% cellulose ribbon-like strips designed to ensure that the inner sides of the box stay in place once assembled. A semi-circle between the inner notches makes for easier assembly/disassembly. The supplier offers different decoration and material choices, but recommends 100% recycled paper combined with embossing as the most eco-friendly option.

Sustainability concerns for e-com

Introduced for the first time at Edition Spéciale, a more eco-friendly version of the market's traditional padded envelope was on show. Rather than a bubble wrap lining, the supplier developed a honeycomb padding made entirely of recycled paper. The protective material is integrated into the lining of the paper envelope, which comes with a double closure system destined for retail in case of returned items. The envelope is available with a one-layer padding, which can be double stacked for more fragile items.

Clothes hangers destined for transport or store display made of wood or household waste were also on show. For this solution, the supplier works with UBQ, an Israeli cleantech company that converts unsorted household waste into a thermoplastic composite. The percentage of each material vary depending on the product, from 30% for wood waste to 6% for household waste.
